Church School

Christian Education

Jesus said “Let the children come to me.”  At First Church, we extend this same welcome.  Our Christian Education program begins with our Pre-K/Kindergarten program and continues with Church School for grades 1-6, and Confirmation classes for grades 7-8.  Our children are invited to become members of First Church through Confirmation at the end of 8th grade.  We also have youth programs for middle and high school students.

Preschool Room

Babies, toddlers and children in preschool through kindergarten are welcome to join us in our Preschool room on the second floor. A short Christian lesson is presented each week, along with a collaborating activity and also some time for play. The room is staffed with a lead teacher and assistant each week.

Church School (Grades 1-6)

Children in grades 1-6 will travel to church school together each week, led by Lead Teacher Carolyn McGarr. The children always begin in worship and remain in the service until they are invited to follow their teacher to church school. Occasionally the group works together on a mission-based project.

We are currently using the “Spill the Beans” curriculum based on the Narrative Lectionary for all children from Nursery through grade 6.  Children will be reading (or be read) the same scripture that we will be hearing during worship.  The readings will be followed by activities that explain and reinforce the scripture message.  We encourage you to talk to your children and share together your thoughts and opinions about what you all have heard and learned.

Confirmation is a two year program which begins in 7th grade.  At the end of these two years, students are invited to affirm their baptisms and become members of First Church.  The Celebration of Confirmation usually take place during a chosen worship service in May or early June.  Each confirmation student is paired with an adult mentor who guides them through the process of learning to be faithful disciples of Christ.

Confirmation 1 (7th Grade)

The Confirmation 1 class, for students in 7th grade, meets on the same Sunday mornings as our Faith First Sunday School classes. They begin each week in worship and are dismissed with the younger children to join their teacher in a classroom dedicated to the Confirmation class. This class consists of higher level activities such as bonding activities, in-depth discussions, mission projects and other content necessary for a young adult to make an informed decision about affirming his/her baptism through Confirmation in eighth grade.  This class is taught by a lead teacher each week.

Confirmation 2 (8th Grade)

The Confirmation 2 class, for students in 8th grade, meets twice a month following worship, from October to May. This year long program provides instruction and conversations about the Christian faith, its practices, expressions, history and beliefs.…
