I remember the sorting hat from the first Harry Potter movie. The sorting hat was intriguing to me. Would I like a hat that revealed what group I belonged in? What if I wanted to strike out and try something new and against my “nature”? Do you want a sorting hat that will reveal the true “nature” of your friends or family? Or at least how they might behave in a situation?
Who wants to know what’s going to happen before it happens? What about free will, hope, the possibility for change? What about people who, against all odds, behave heroically?
This week’s scripture is Jesus telling the parable of the goats and sheep. The Goats don’t see Jesus in the hungry and hurting. They don’t take care of the ones in need-as they would Christ. The sheep care for the hungry and the hurting as though they were caring for Christ.
Who wants to be sorted into the house of goats-in other words to be the Slytherins? Don’t we all want a chance to be in the house of the good sheep-or Harry’s house the Gryffindor’s.
