based on Genesis 21:1-3, 22:1-14 The binding of Isaac
This is a famous Hebrew bible text that also is very disturbing. It raises all kinds of questions about how much God requires of us in love, and what kind of God in fact we have. A test of faith in this story must also traumatize a beloved son and devoted wife – how are we to receive a story told in this way? What does it evoke in us? How are we accountable to a story like this in our tradition, and how does it speak to our lives today? In this week that is also the start of the Jewish New Year, and the International Day of Peace, Pastor Marisa considers with us the cost of love, love that endures trial and suffering and emerges life changing if we can but believe and stand fast.
