Women’s Benevolent Society
Luncheon and Speaker: Stephan Platzer
Friday, October 4, 2019
The Women’s Benevolent Society begins another exciting year of monthly luncheon programs!
Please join us October 4th at First Church for lunch and a fascinating program taking us to the high seas. Our speaker is local author and retired chemist Stephan Platzer. He will be discussing the adventures of the second-oldest sailing vessel in the United States, the Schooner Ernestina. Stephan wrote the book, Bringing E Home: Transatlantic Voyage of Schooner Ernestina In 1982. The book is an account of his 41-day journey as part of a joint Cape Verdean and American crew bringing the historic schooner from Africa to the U.S. entirely under sail. The Ernestina’s rich history includes service as a Grand Banks fishing vessel; an Arctic exploration ship under the command of Captain Bob Bartlett; and a merchant ship transporting Cape Verdean immigrants to Massachusetts. The presentation will include slides from his transatlantic expedition.
We look forward to seeing you on the 4th of October for lunch!
Please bring a salad or dessert to share.
