Lent 2020: Entering the Passion of Jesus

Lent 2020: Entering the Passion of Jesus

Lent at First Church

As we enter the season of Lent, we will explore a special worship series on Sundays and with a book study called “Entering the Passion of Jesus” – Writer Amy-Jill Levine calls us to look anew at each day of the last week of Jesus’ life on earth, and come inside more deeply to what we believe is the central transition of our Christian faith – Jesus’ passage from his human life and ministry and suffering, to the cross of compassion and ultimate sacrifice, to the triumph of love over hate, life over death, light over darkness forever on Easter morning!

Each Sunday of Lent 2020 will be one day from the last week of Jesus’ life explored through scripture, song, art and preaching. Throughout the six weeks of Lent we will “freeze frame” moments in Holy Week so we might put ourselves in the picture, thereby “Entering the Passion of Jesus.”  How might taking a closer look at the ancient story open us up to a deeper conviction for our role in its ongoing message?

Read along with us, the book “Entering the Passion of Jesus” by Amy-Jill Levine*, both at home and in a special book study we will offer in addition to powerful Sunday worship!

We’ll explore the last week of Jesus’ life these nights with video study, bible reading, prayer and discussion:

Ash Wednesday  February 26th  7:00–8:30pm

Tuesday, March 3rd  7:00–8:30pm

Tuesday, March 17th  7:00–8:30pm

*You can order the book yourself or pick up a copy in the church office with a donation up to $10/book.    “Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner’s Guide to Holy Week” by Amy-Jill Levine
